How do I open a .CSV file in Excel?

The instructions below are for how you should open .CSV files to ensure Excel doesn’t remove leading zeros on numbers. For example, if you have SKU 012345, Excel will automatically change this to 12345 for your convenience. This will cause issues when you attempt to import this file back in since the SKU number has been changed.

The steps outlined below will ensure that numbers won’t be altered when you open them in Excel.

  1. You'll first open up a new Excel sheet.
  2. In the Data tab, you'll click "From Text" button. Locate the .CSV file and click "Import."

  1. In the Delimiters drop down select "Comma", in the Data Type Detection drop down select "Do not detect data types".

  1. Click "Load".

This will open the file without altering the columns.
